Extending The Reach Of Sight: New Vision Centres In Raxaul, Chhapra, And Kurhani
Akhand Jyoti launches three new Vision Centres in underserved regions of Bihar, with support from CharityVision, Siemens Healthineers, and Bhupendra Babu.
Bringing Eye Care to the Doorsteps of the Forgotten
In many parts of rural Bihar, a simple eye check-up can mean traveling several hours, often at the cost of a day's wages or more. For countless individuals, curable blindness remains a life sentence simply due to lack of access. At Akhand Jyoti, we are determined to change that reality—one village, one family, and one individual at a time.
In a significant stride towards that mission, three new Vision Centres have been inaugurated in Raxaul, Chhapra, and Kurhani—each strategically located to serve some of the most underserved and remote populations along the Indo-Nepal border and rural heartland of Bihar.
These centres will now provide essential primary eye care to over 16,000 people annually.
What These Vision Centres Offer
Each Vision Centre is staffed with trained optometrists—many of whom are graduates of Akhand Jyoti’s Football to Eyeball girls’ empowerment initiative—and offers:
- Free or low-cost eye screenings
- Diagnosis and management of refractive errors
- Affordable prescription spectacles
- Referrals to base hospitals for cataract and other surgeries
- Community awareness and preventive education
The centres are equipped with digital diagnostic tools and connected to Akhand Jyoti’s larger network of hospitals, ensuring seamless continuity of care from first diagnosis to final surgery.
Strategic Partnerships Driving Sustainable Impact
The establishment of these centres has been made possible through the generous support of CharityVision, Siemens Healthineers, and individual donor- Bhuepndra Babu who believe in equitable access to healthcare. These partners not only bring funding but also share a vision for scalable, community-rooted healthcare solutions that reach India’s last-mile populations.
By working together, we are creating models that can be replicated in other geographies with similar needs, making the impact far-reaching and sustainable.
Empowering Rural Girls as Future Eye Care Leaders
What truly sets Akhand Jyoti’s approach apart is the integration of women’s empowerment into healthcare delivery. The new Vision Centres are not just health units—they are platforms for leadership and livelihood.
Most of the optometrists managing these centres are young girls from rural and low-income families, trained through our in-house 'Football to Eyeball' programme. These women now serve as first responders and community educators, delivering care with compassion and building trust within their communities.
In doing so, they are transforming not just their own lives, but also reshaping social norms about what rural girls can achieve.
Towards Vision 2030: No One Left in the Dark
These three centres mark a critical milestone in our journey toward Vision 2030—Akhand Jyoti’s long-term mission to perform 2 million eye surgeries, conduct 12 million screenings, and empower 1,500 rural girls by the end of the decade.
With every new centre, we move closer to a future where no one suffers avoidable blindness simply because they are poor or live in a remote village. Our expanding network of Vision Centres is designed to make timely, affordable, and high-quality eye care a reality across rural Bihar and Uttar Pradesh.
The Road Ahead
As these new centres begin their journey of service, the focus will remain on impact, sustainability, and local ownership. With community engagement at its core and continued support from our partners, we are confident that the Vision Centres in Raxaul, Chhapra, and Kurhani will become beacons of light and hope in their regions.
