Growing up as the eldest of four children, Jyoti Kumari rarely got to make decisions only for herself. Hopes of her parents, her younger siblings watching what she did, questions about school and money, all of it became part of her growing up, too.

One ambition took hold early, and it stayed with her for years. Jyoti wanted to become a doctor.

"I always wanted to study something that would allow me to help people. That dream never really left me."

The Jyoti Who Dreamed

It was a simple enough dream for a young girl, and her parents, Jay Shankar Singh and Siya Devi, never once tried to talk her out of it. But like many families in their situation, money made it hard to keep her in school.

That particular dream did not come true, not in the way she had pictured it as a child. But her wish to keep studying stayed with her, even when the road ahead was far from clear.

A Different Door in June

In June 2023, Jyoti joined Akhand Jyoti through the Football to Eyeball Girls' Empowerment Programme. It meant she could go back to studying, and this time, eye care would be her subject.

Today, she is a first-year Bachelor of Optometry student at Akhand Jyoti. Her days are full of lectures and practicals, all building towards a career centred on something most of us take completely for granted: the ability to see.

It was not the medical career she once pictured for herself. But it let her keep learning, and for Jyoti, that was what mattered most.

"When I got this opportunity, I felt I had been given another chance to continue my education. I did not want to let it go."

Changes That Do Not Appear on a Marksheet

Some of the changes Jyoti sees in herself will never show up on an exam paper or a certificate.

Since joining Akhand Jyoti, she has grown more confident. She makes her own decisions now, something that did not always come easily to her, and she has slowly started to believe she can take on challenges that once felt out of reach.

None of this happened overnight. Jyoti is still only in her first year, and much of her story is still ahead of her, still working out what it means to stand on her own, as a professional and as a person.

A Future She Can Finally Picture

For a long time, Jyoti’s future was shaped by what was possible. Education had to fit around circumstances, and the dream she had carried since childhood seemed increasingly difficult to reach.

Today, she finds herself thinking differently.

She is beginning to imagine what life could look like beyond her studies—not just as an optometry professional, but as a young woman who can make her own choices and contribute to her community.

She hopes to pursue a Master’s degree in the future and eventually lead a Vision Centre, bringing eye care closer to people who need it most.

The path is still long. But for the first time in a while, Jyoti is not just thinking about what she could have been. She is thinking about what she can become.

"I want to keep studying and become someone who can make a difference in the lives of people in my community."

The Jyoti Who Is Still Becoming

It is too early to call this a story of arrival. Jyoti is only in her first year, with plenty of learning, and plenty of life, still ahead of her.

The girl who once dreamed of becoming a doctor has not gone anywhere. She is there in the young woman studying optometry today, growing steadier in her own decisions, and getting ready for challenges she could not have imagined a few years ago.

And somewhere further ahead is another Jyoti still, the woman she is working towards becoming, and perhaps, one day, someone a younger girl in her village looks up to when she pictures a future of her own.

For now, Jyoti is still studying, still learning, still becoming. Her story does not need an ending yet.
