A House Held Together by Work

Srinjal Singh is eighteen and from Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh. She lives with her grandparents, her mother Rachna Singh, and her younger brother Harsh. Their home follows a practical rhythm shaped by responsibility.

After her father, Ram Pratap Singh, passed away in 2022 following a long illness, life became more difficult for the family. Her mother began working as a tailor to support the household. The steady sound of sewing marked long hours spent making sure the family could manage.

Money was limited, and every decision mattered. Continuing education required patience and sacrifice.

A Dream Set Aside

Srinjal once imagined becoming a dancer. It was a dream she held close, but financial pressure made it difficult to pursue.

“When things changed at home, I stopped thinking about dancing,” she says. “I felt I had to focus on what was necessary.”

Rather than dwell on what she could not do, she adjusted. She helped at home, stayed focused on her studies, and learned to move forward quietly.

Stepping Into Learning

In July 2023, Srinjal joined Akhand Jyoti and began her first year of Optometry. Entering a structured academic environment felt new and unfamiliar.

Classes, practical sessions, and study groups soon shaped her routine. She arrived early, took careful notes, and listened closely during training. At first, she felt unsure of herself. “I was nervous,” she says. “I didn’t know if I would fit in.”

But regular effort slowly replaced hesitation.

Finding Her Voice

Study did more than build technical knowledge. It changed how she interacted with others. Group tasks encouraged her to speak more, and training helped her communicate clearly and patiently.

She began helping classmates with notes and asking questions without fear. These small moments-built confidence that showed in everyday interactions.

“I feel more comfortable talking to people now,” she says. “Earlier, I would stay quiet.”

Through her studies, Srinjal started seeing eye care as work that combines skill with empathy. Practical learning showed her how careful observation and gentle communication can make patients feel safe.
