At Akhand Jyoti Eye Hospital, we want to restore sight for every person with curable blindness. In our mission to eradicate blindness, we also envision the upliftment of rural girls to realize their human potential fully. Rural girls, therefore, need to develop their skills and authority and not get stifled by gender inequality and patriarchy.
We believe that cultural changes need to be born within the community and cannot be forcefully driven. These community-level changes, therefore, require tremendous support and momentum to gather its necessary force. Over the last decade, we have been learning and developing our practice of eliminating blindness in low-income states of India by enriching lives of several rural girls to become qualified optometrists to lead our blindness eradication program.
