Akhand Jyoti started curing blindness in December 2005, concentrating principally in Bihar. Akhand Jyoti is now one of the top five eye hospitals in India, providing cataract surgeries, specialty treatment for glaucoma, retinal issues and paediatric eye care, as well as refractive error correction.
We believe that no one should suffer from blindness because they cannot afford the cost of treatment. Due to a high level of poverty in Bihar, up to 2022, we will provide 80% of our surgeries free of charge to those who cannot afford the cost.
We are empowering women to lead our blindness eradication efforts. Since 2009, we have been training rural girls to become qualified optometrists and expect to have 300 girls enrolled on our programe by 2022.
